Martha Marsh Chandler Endowed Scholarship

Martha Marsh Chandler Endowed Scholarship

The Martha Marsh Chandler Endowed Scholarship was created in 1988 by Martha Chandler, a member of ArtCenter100, to encourage excellence in future design by helping students with need and strong creative potential in any program at ArtCenter. It continued to be supported through the very generous donations of her daughter, Ms. Judy Webb. a long-time and dear friend of ArtCenter and member of ArtCenter100, until she passed away in 2024.

Martha’s involvement with ArtCenter took many forms and as an ArtCenter100 member and scholarship donor, she was very active and cherished. She made contributions to the College’s general fund a year before she established her named endowment. She described her scholarship as follows: “This scholarship will be given to encourage excellence in design for the future by helping needy students with strong creative potential.” In the true spirit of Martha’s giving, she imposed as few restrictions as possible in order to help as many students as possible.

Martha Marsh Chandler, a beloved philanthropist who helped raise funds for scholarships for the ArtCenter College of Design, passed away in 1993. She was also active in the Women’s Auxiliary of the Hospital of the Good Samaritan, the Costume Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Pasadena Guild Children’s Hospital and the Historic Land Assn. Mrs. Chandler was elected president of Otis Art Associates, the volunteer support group for Otis Art Institute, in 1961, and served two terms. Through the group’s efforts, the institute staged formidable gallery exhibits of work by such artists as Leonardo da Vinci. Known as a gracious hostess, Mrs. Chandler entertained such celebrities as England’s Prince Philip and Bob Hope and his wife, Dolores. Before her marriage to Chandler in 1957, she had served as vice president of the Los Angeles Junior League and was a member of The Spinsters. She had been a Red Cross volunteer nurse’s aide during World War II. Born and brought up in Los Angeles, Mrs. Chandler attended Marlborough School for Girls and Dobbs Ferry School in New York.
