Norman Schureman Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Norman Schureman Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Norman Schureman Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2010 to honor and remember Norm Schureman, an ArtCenter alumnus and beloved Product Design faculty member. This scholarship supports continuing undergraduate students in the Product Design program who demonstrate financial need, merit and who exemplify Norm Schureman’s tenacious work ethic, curiosity, playfulness, and love for experimentation and the exploration of ideas.

Norman was a beloved instructor, colleague, mentor and friend to hundreds of Art Center students, faculty, staff and alumni whose life was ended abruptly by a tragic and senseless act of gun violence. Norm’s relationship with ArtCenter began almost 40 years ago when his father, Bob Schureman, taught classes in the ID department and Norm would tag along as a young curious creative. Years later, Norm launched his official design career after graduating from Art Center in Industrial Design. He returned to the College to teach at Art Center Europe and then Pasadena. Both Norm and Bob have inspired hundreds of design students over the years.

For over 20 years, Norm devoted himself tirelessly to the College, instilling in his students a passion for design, a love for drawing and an eye for excellence. In his Viscom and Dynamic Sketching classes, as well as his Product Design classes, Norm brought criticality tempered with humor to his students and their work. Each term would generate new and constantly innovative ideas, images and prototypes. A place in the student gallery was always reserved for the great projects from Norm’s classes.

Remembering Norm, then President Lorne Buchman said, “Norm inspired hundreds of students. Not only those that he taught but those considering whether or not they even had the gumption to apply to ArtCenter. One of the ways the College can be true to his memory is to make sure young creatives have access to pursue a first-rate design education.”

‘’Norm loved being a teacher and truly believed an Art Center education was something special," Schureman’s widow, Fati, said. “Our family is humbled that the College has come together to honor Norm with a scholarship in his name.”

Schureman’s father, Bob, himself a faculty member at the College said, “ArtCenter has been such a big part of my life and the life of my son and I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of support the ArtCenter community has given our family.”

Karen Hofmann, then Chair of Product Design and now President of the College said, ’’Norm was a friend and mentor and a source of inspiration both inside and outside of the classroom. He made students feel that they could change the world and this scholarship is a way to ensure his legacy continues."
