The JR Gaulding III Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The JR Gaulding Ill Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by John and Rita Gaulding as a tribute to the life of their son John (JR), an exceptional photography student and graduate of ArtCenter. The fund benefits photography students with demonstrated need and merit. It is the hope of the Gaulding family that the award will inspire students to push the boundaries of their medium and experiment with non-conventional, compelling techniques.
“We are very proud that our son’s memory, spirit, and work will continue as a part of ArtCenter. It is here that he found his art and his passion,” said his father John R. Gaulding. “His style was edgy and frame-breaking, his technique innovative and experimental. He was a truly magnificent talent and would have been deeply touched that his scholarship will help others push the boundaries of their own capabilities.”
“There are many donors to the Gaulding III Memorial Scholarship, including corporations, foundations, universities, and so many from JR’s very diverse community of friends and colleagues,” said his father. “We are deeply grateful to all those who have become part of this incredible tribute to our son.”
JR received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from ArtCenter in 2004. He lived and worked in Squaw Valley, CA as a film editor and producer for an extreme sports media company. Following his graduation from ArtCenter he worked as a freelance photographer and production assistant for a variety of film and television projects. JR’s images and prints have been exhibited in several Los Angeles galleries, including a collection of artist’s portraits now on permanent exhibition at The Brewery, a live/work community of over 450 artists in Los Angeles.
“JR touched so many people with his art during his short life,” said his father. “He will continue to do so as outstanding young photographers at Art Center become JR Gaulding III Scholars.”
